By no means do I think you can’t be both!
And I would hate to pigeon hole either one of my kids into a specific category.
But I do love watching their opposite personalities blossom.
Evan LOVES school and LOVES to do “homework”. He LOVES the structure of having a set schedule and working toward a goal. He LOVES sitting and doing worksheets.
Carter LOVES…making those around him laugh!
Last week Evan told Jeremy, “Dad I want to learn to read now.”
And Jeremy’s response, “Your mom is a teacher, go tell her.” (and no he didn’t sound like an uncaring, dead beat dad when he said that, he was just stating the obvious and kinda was joking with him and me while saying it. He also is fully aware that according to Evan I don’t know much about anything. And that he and I bicker and fight all day long!)
I looked at Jeremy with a panicked look on my face and said, “Jeremy, I am NOT a pre-K/Kindergarten teacher. I have NO idea how to teach a kid to read.” (And besides that I would actually have to plan out school work over the summer. Ummm hello?)
So with all of that, I told Evan we could immediately start working on reading this summer. But since I would have to work with Evan, I might as well work with Carter to get him ready for pre-K, since I feel he may be slightly behind because of his late summer birthday.
Oh boy! This week has been interesting with the boys! And again proves what different personalities and strengths each kid has. And believe me, Jeremy and I try to keep both of them well rounded but it’s so hard not to laugh at what is so blatantly obvious to anyone who knows my two boys.

Trying to work with Carter is one big game. He wants to play and draw and sing and even just stare at the wall. HA! This pic was taken when I was helping Evan with directions and Carter was suppose to be practicing the letter “L”. Instead he was completely zoned in on the wall. He was doing something funky with his fingers, what appeared to be him trying to “pinch” the faces in the photos on the wall. He was having a great time. And the funny thing, when we are done with his work he begs for to do more. But wants to give me the hardest time during work time. He wants to chit chat and giggle and tell jokes while working. He holds the pencil upside down to see if I will correct him. He will do the opposite of what the directions say just to get rise out of me. He sits patiently waiting on me to finish something with Evan and when I turn to him to check his progress, he is making cross eyes at me.
Evan doesn’t understand Carter’s need to be funny all the time. This is serious business! And some points this week, he told Carter to just leave the room if he wasn’t going to do his work. Evan could do school work all day, if I was creative enough to work something out for him. He loves the discipline in it! Go figure.
So here I am, doing summer school work with a serious student and a class clown! Wish me luck! Ugh Evan, quit trying to learn so much!
